How should you specify labware so the quotation comes back right?

Specify in three fields, in order: Material → Volume → Pack. Most labware quoting errors come from leaving one of the three implicit — a "500 mL beaker" could be PP or PMP, single or pack of ten, and the price differs by an order of magnitude.

  1. Material. For glass, state borosilicate or soda-lime. For plastic, name the polymer: PP and PMP/TPX behave differently from HDPE and polystyrene under heat and solvents.
  2. Volume. Give the capacity and, for volumetric ware, the tolerance class you need. A volumetric flask or burette without a stated class is not yet specified.
  3. Pack. Say whether you are pricing per unit, per pack or per box. Lines in this range are offered variously as singles, packs of 4, 5, 10 and 20, and boxes of 25, 50, 80, 100, 300, 500 and 1000.

What should you check before ordering glassware and plasticware?

Check material, sterility and pack quantity first — those three drive both price and fitness for purpose. Electrical supply and calibration matter for the instrument lines.

Borosilicate resists thermal shock; soda-lime does not. Confirm per line, especially for anything that will be heated.

Polymer

PP and PMP/TPX tolerate heat and autoclaving far better than HDPE or polystyrene. Do not assume all plastic labware is autoclavable — ask per line.

Tolerance class

Volumetric flasks, burettes and cylinders should be quoted with a class and tolerance, not just a capacity.

Sterile vs non-sterile

Several tube, tip and transfer-pipette lines exist in both forms under near-identical names. State which you need on the order.

Pack quantity

Confirm whether the quoted figure is per unit, per pack or per box before comparing prices.

Electrical supply

Voltage and frequency for heated sleeves, hot plates, stirrers, centrifuges, dryers, signal generators and power supplies.

Calibration record

For balances, pH meters and volumetric ware, ask what calibration or test record ships with the item.

Consumable continuity

For petri dishes, tips, tubes and plates, confirm reorder availability and lead time before standardising on a line.

Scalpel and blade lines need an institutional purchase control, a sharps container and a disposal route agreed before delivery.

What do the plastic lines safely tolerate?

Treat plastic labware as chemical-resistant containment, not as heating apparatus. Polypropylene and PMP/TPX are the heat-tolerant polymers in this range; HDPE and polystyrene are not, and none of it belongs over a flame.

Ask for the polymer and the maximum service temperature against each line before you specify it for a practical involving heat, solvents or autoclaving. Where a class needs heated vessels, use the borosilicate glassware lines and a heating sleeve or hot plate rather than a plastic beaker. For single-use and sterile lines, confirm whether the item is supplied sterile and how it is packed, since several are offered in both sterile and non-sterile versions.

Which lines suit a school lab, and which suit a research lab?

Sort by buyer, not by material. The graduated beakers, wash bottles, test tube racks, spotting tiles, stirring rods and dropping bottles are classroom lines; the PCR plates, barrier tips, sterile microtubes, reagent reservoirs and optical seals are research lines that happen to sit in the same sub-range.

School and college practicals are generally served by the Lab Equipment instrument lines plus the plastic beakers, cylinders, bottles and racks.
